Pete Goes into the World
by William McDaniel
One day late in the summer Pete left home
To see the world, and therein gain great knowledge
This was the start of Pete's "life on his own"
For Pete, he had enrolled in Junior College
Tears of relief his mother did not lack
She said "Your going will bring so much joy"
His dad said "Pete, you'd better not come back,"
"Or I'll crack your head, you flimsy, useless boy"
By now Pete was most sick of this oppression
He would achieve great things for all to see!
Instead of sinking deep into depression
He'd study hard, and earn his PhD
'Twas a shame, Pete weren't in class, fall, spring or winter
He slept and hung out at the student center
