Chin 陳 /Chen 陈 Family Tree
covering the descendents of our common forefather Dáshèng
of the 18th generation from our first forefather Mó
Chin is the pre-1949 Taishanese spelling of the same family name with the traditional character 陳 which is currently standardized by the Mandarin pinyin spelling of Chen with simplified character 陈. In Hong Kong, it follows the Cantonese spelling of Chan. The family tree follows a generational poem, where traditionally each Chinese character in the generational poem represents one generation of married male offsprings. The Chinese character becomes the beginning character of each offspring's generational name upon marriage. Now a days, this tradition is rarely followed.
The generational poem for the Chin/Chen family is as follows and consists of twenty Chinese characters, and so can be used by up to 20 generations of offspring to the end of the poem. The poem is taken from the genealogy book for Dáshèng of the 18th generation,

There is also a short history on the Chin family in Taishan written in Simplified Chinese. If you or your family elder do choose to name your child following the
generational poem,
consult the genealogy book to not duplicate a name on the same
generational level by looking up the most recent ancestor listed under your immediate lineage, and see which Chinese generational character is used by your ancestor's generation, and count the number of generations down to the level your child would appear. Then look up the Chinese character in the generational poem and count to the Chinese character the number of times the generations the child is away from the ancestor listed. That would be the character you would use to create your child's generational name. Also, try to avoid using the characters in the
generational poem that does not belong to the offspring's generation,
to avoid confusion.
My mother gave me the generational name 達恆
when I got married, and she also gave a generational name 萬壑 as the birth
name for our first son Tobias Nikolai Chin
for the 28th generation of our family tree who was born on Dec 3, 2003, at 5:49pm.

Determining Relationships
- To determine the relationship of any two persons on the same generation level on the family tree, count the number of common generation levels between the common forefather and the two person interested, but not counting the generations the forefather or the two persons are on. Then use that number of common generation levels as the prefix for the word cousin. For example, if I have a relative who is related with me with a common great-grandfather, we have two generation levels of separation (parents + grandparents), then that person would be my second cousin.
- To determine the relationship of a relative who is not on the same common generation level, we append the difference of generation level to the cousin relationship determine above. For example, the child of my 2nd cousin is my 2nd cousin once removed, and the grandchild of my 2nd cousin is my 2nd cousin twice removed.
- In Chinese culture, specific terms are used for gender-specific, paternal or maternal cousins who are generationally older or younger than you when addressing them by relationship. This can be adapted in English by adding the word nephew, niece, uncle or aunt to the removed clause, so my 1st cousin's son, would be my 1st cousin once removed nephew, or cousin-nephew for short. Or my father's male 1st cousin is my 1st cousin once removed uncle, or cousin-uncle for short.
