Co-founded by Tom Hu of RPI and Nelson Chin of BU, the League of Northeast Inter-collegiate Table Tennis (L-NITT) began during the 1992-93 academic year with six member schools (BU, Harvard U., Castleton St., RPI, SUNY Stny Bk, UConn), with Tom serving as the first L-NITT Director. During the second year, Nelson served as the league director and L-NITT grew into two divisions, Northern and Southern, a partitioning of the schools concentrated in Northeast U.S.A. The original ASCII logo shown above was started to be used at this time in sending communications to the Usenet newsgroup rec.sport.table-tennis.

During the 1999-2000 academic year under the presidency of Karen Chang of Wellesley College, the league has grown to 34 member schools all along the East Coast and has renamed itself as the National Collegiate Table Tennis Association (NCTTA) with vision to expand westward across the country.
