Homework

Homework will be posted to the course webpage on Tuesdays, and will be due the following Tuesday in class (unless otherwise noted). Late homeworks will be accepted with a 30% penalty until class on Thursday. No homeworks will be accepted after this since the solutions will be posted and possibly discussed in class. If you have a conflict that prevents you from finishing an assignment on time, make sure you discuss it with me before the deadline.

Collaboration on assignments is fine, but you should list the names of any collaborators in your assignment writeup. All writeups must be done alone. You should not read anyone else's writeup, or allow anyone else to read yours. Copying answers from another student or from the Internet will have serious consequences.

Exams

There will be an in-class midterm and a (cumulative) final exam. You can bring one double-sided, hand-written page of notes to the exams, but they will otherwise be closed book.

Quizzes

There will be occasional quizzes during lecture and/or discussion section. These will be very short, and not terribly difficult: they are just to make sure you keep up with the basic concepts from lecture. However, they will not be announced in advance, and failure to hand in a quiz will yield a score of 0, so regular attendance is highly recommended. As with the homeworks, if you cannot attend a lecture let me know in advance to avoid losing credit for the quiz.

Grading

Final grades will be roughly based on the following formula:

  • 20% midterm
  • 20% final
  • 10% quizzes
  • 50% homework
All grades will be curved, and I may take additional factors into account (e.g. improvement over the course of the semester, participation) in determining the final grade.
