My Beach Story

August 2000

So I am sitting there on the beach, reading my book I'm sitting on top of a sand dune like area. The ocean is probably at high tide and hitting the beach really hard. While reading my book, I think to myself, "am I too close to the water?" I'm sitting three or four feet above the water line (not including the part of the wave that hits the beach), and all the sand around me is dry. So I figure I am safe. So I continue reading my book.

What happens? The next thing I notice is that I am surrounded by water. My camera bag is almost ready to start floating. My brand new white towel has turned tan from all the sand that was in the water. My socks are completely wet. The lower half of my pants are soaked.

I scurry backwards as fast as I can dragging as much stuff as possible. After I get resettled fifteen feet away from where I was sitting, I look around. And what do I see? That basically the spot where I was sitting was pretty much the only place that got wet. I even took pictures.

As you can see above, there is dry sand everywhere else, except where I was sitting.

Here it is from a different angle. You can sort of see the steepness of the slope of the beach and how high the water had to climb to reach me. Notice the people in the upper left of the picture. They are sitting on DRY sand. Grr...

Lastly, here is a picture of my towel. My brand new white towel that I had just bought 3 hours ago. Now it's all filled with sand. Why did I buy another towel? Well that's another story all together.
