Homework 1
CS101SA1
(due Thursday, May 31, 2001)

Your assignment should be typewritten and single-spaced.  The answer to question 1 should be at least a paragraph, but no more than a page, long.  Use a spell checker.  Make sure you staple everything together.

Your first page should be a cover page containing the class name and section, the date, and your student number.  Your cover page should look like this:

Here are the questions:

  1. (50 points) Compare and contrast Windows ME and Linux. In particular, address the following:
    1. system requirements (e.g., processor, memory, disk, and other required components)
    2. available software
    3. networking capabilities
    4. other capabilities (e.g., graphics design, multimedia, and other applications)
    5. what reviewers say (for this, cite the published opinions of at least three computer experts, whether you find them on the Internet, in magazines, or in the library).

  2. (50 points) For this problem, you will manipulate and print a spreadsheet in Excel. Where indicated, print out your results.  Attach all pages to your homework and staple.
    1. Download the following file from the course web page: students.xls
    2. Using formulas, calculate the three rightmost columns of the spreadsheet:
      • Average Quiz Grade
      • Average Homework Grade
      • Grade (as determined by the Syllabus in this course)
    3. Using formulas, calculate the two lowermost rows of the spreadsheet:
      • Median Grade
      • Average Grade
    4. Change the formatting of the new cells so that each number has only one decimal place showing.
    5. Change the formatting so that the cell widths match their content (use AutoFit).
    6. Add border lines between the heading rows and the data, and between the raw data and the calculated values.
    7. Using Print Preview, format the spreadsheet so that it all fits on one page and is centered horizontally.
    8. Save and print out the spreadsheet.
    9. Revise the spreadsheet (imagine that someone made mistakes entering data):
      • Make the necessary corrections (change the data in five or more cells).
      • Save the new revised version of the spreadsheet under another name.
      • Print this new chart.
      • Circle the value that you changed. Use a pen.
      • Circle all other values that changed as a result of the original change.
    10. Sort the data by last name, and print it out.
    11. Sort the data by grade, and print it out.
    12. Using Data Analysis Tools, create a histogram of the grades in chart format, and print it out.
    13. Using the Chart Wizard, create a chart of the median grades for each assignment (not including the averages or ultimate grade).
      • For this chart create a column chart.
      • Add a title to your chart.
      • Add a legend to your chart; place the legend in the lower part of the chart.
      • Print the chart.
