Old Course News

1/10/03:  Welcome to CS101.  Please note that we are using edition 2 of The Computer Continuum by Lauckner and Lintner.  If you get the chance before the first class, you might want to get a start on Chapter 1.  By Wednesday's class, you are expected to have read all of Chapter 1.

Also, please read the Academic Code of Conduct, a copy of which you may find here:  Academic Code of Conduct.

You should get in the habit of checking this course news regularly.

Important Notice:  The university has changed the drop/withdraw policy.  You now have a shorter time period in which to drop or withdraw from a course.  Please mark your calendar with the important dates above, in particular, February 14, the last day to drop a class (without a "W" on your transcript), and March 7, the last day to withdraw from a class (with a "W" on your transcript).

1/17/03:  Due to the holiday, there are no labs this week, however, Xin will be in the Teaching Lab on Tuesday from 2:00-3:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 10:00-11:00 a.m.  If you missed the first week of labs, you are strongly encouraged to go talk to Xin and see what you missed.

Xin and I will have regularly scheduled office hours from Tuesday onward.

Have a nice holiday.

2/7/03:  The deadline for Homework 1 is extended to Monday, February 10, 2003.

IMPORTANT REMINDER:  Per the Syllabus, you must submit your homework using the gsubmit program on the csa system.  Printed or emailed homeworks, and homeworks on floppy disks or other media, will not be accepted.

Homework 1 is here: HW1

Please see the updated reading assignment (above).  For reading assignments not in the book, look below under "Additional Readings."

2/18/03:  Midterm Exam 1 is rescheduled for Friday, February 21.  Review materials are found below under "Resources."  Please note that the Syllabus is changed:  because there will be no "lab part" of this midterm, its value toward your grade is 10%, rather than 15%.  The Second Midterm Exam will now be worth 20%.

3/10/03:  Have a great break!

I will not be covering Chapter 5 in class, but I want you to read it.  It elaborates on concepts in Chapter 4.  There is also a section on Excel you should read.  If anybody has any questions regarding Chapter 5, I will be more than happy to address them in class or during office hours.

Next we will start discussing networks.  The next Chapter I will discuss in class will be Chapter 7.  In addition, Xin has an interesting lab planned for you in which he will show you some UNIX tools you can use to examine your network, and the Internet.
