How to print in the research lab from OSX (Updated for 10.6)
It took me a while to figure this out so here are the instructions
for the benefit of other OSX users in the lab.
New instructions for 10.6 using CUPS
-
Open the Printer Setup Utility.
-
Click the Add button and the following window should appear.
Click IP in the toolbar and fill in the appropriate fields as shown
below. Don't click Add just yet.
-
From the Print Using drop-down select Select Printer
Software... and a driver selection window should pop up. Pick
the appropriate driver (HP LaserJet 4340 for
clunky and
bullwinkle, HP Color LaserJet 4700 for
acrylics.) Click OK and then click Add in
the original window.
-
You will be presented will various printer driver options. Make sure Duplex Unit is checked and click Continue.
-
That's it. The printer you added should now be listed in the Printer Setup Utility.
Old instructions for 10.5 using Samba (possibly out-of-date)
-
Open the Printer Setup Utility found under /Applications/Utilities.
-
Click the Add button and the following window should appear.
-
Click the More Printers... button to bring up the popup window shown below and select Windows Printing from the top drop-down menu and from the one underneath it select Network Neighborhood.
-
Double click Cs-Nt in the updated list of networks and enter your username and password when prompted.
- Double click Cs-Nts1 in the updated list.
- Select one of the printers, eg, bullwinkle and the appropriate model from the drop-down menu underneath, in this case HP LaserJet 4350.
- Click the Add button and the printer should appear in your list of available printers.
-
Finally, to enable duplex and other printer options, select bullwinkle from the list of printers in the main window and click the Show Info button in the menubar.
In the popup window select Installable Options from the drop-down menu. Underneath a list of options should appear. Check Duplex Unit and any other appropriate options. Click Apply Changes and you should be all set.
