Pickling cucumbers has been around for thousands of years, dating back to 2030 B.C. when cucumbers were brought to the Tigris Valley from India. Though, pickling other vegetables has been around for even longer tracing back to the Mesopotamians!
The word pickle comes from the Dutch verb pekel, which means to salt or brine something.
The phrase "in a pickle" (referring to being in a difficult situation) originated from Shakespeare. In his 1611 play The Tempest Alonso asks Trinculo, “How camest thou in this pickle?”
The Philadelphia Eagles drank pickle juice during their game against the Dallas Cowboys on September 3, 2000 to prevent muscle cramping on the 109 °F day, in which they went onto win 41-14. It was later confirmed in a BYU study that drinking pickle juice can help relieve a cramp 37 percent faster than drinking water.
