History

Tokyo’s fashion history began during the Edo period (1603-1868), when clothing was deeply tied to social classes. Samurai wore formal kimonos, while merchants adopted more colorful versions as their wealth grew. The Meiji Restoration in 1868 ushered in Western influences, with Western-style clothing like suits and dresses becoming popular among the elite. The rise of fashionable districts like Ginza symbolized Japan’s modernization.

After World War II, Tokyo became a global fashion hub, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s with the emergence of youth-driven subcultures like “Harajuku” and “Kawaii” fashion. Designers like Issey Miyake and Rei Kawakubo brought Japan’s avant-garde fashion to the world stage. By the 1980s and 1990s, Tokyo was known for its cutting-edge street style and luxury fashion. Today, Tokyo remains a key influence in global fashion, blending traditional elements with contemporary trends.
