BU Survival Guide

Welcome to our BU Survival guide! You'll find lots of helpful information below!

Lifestyle

Coming to Boston University can be exciting as it is daunting. Being in a new place means developing a new routine around BU's campus culture and offerings. This section will help orient you to the resources and opportunities around campus which can help you find community and adjust to living in a new space!

Social Life

  • Join a few small student clubs or interest groups early in the semester; low-commitment meetups are an easy way to build a friend group without overwhelming your schedule. Many clubs host regular casual events that make it simple to meet people with shared interests.
  • Visit campus coffee spots and common areas consistently; becoming a familiar face makes striking up conversations much easier and creates more organic social opportunities over time.

Exercise and Activity

  • FitRec is the primary fitness and recreation center on campus and is a convenient hub for gym sessions, classes, and intramural sign-ups — try a few different classes during the first month to see what you like.
  • Mix short, consistent workouts (30–45 minutes) with one longer weekend session to maintain fitness while balancing academics; incorporating walking or cycling for short commutes adds useful activity without extra time burden.
  • Explore the Esplanade and local running routes: Boston has a strong running culture and these routes are friendly for newcomers looking to join group runs or solo sessions safely.
