New York City has an extremely rich history. It was originally founded in 1624 as New Amsterdam by the Dutch. In 1664, the British captured the city and renamed it to new york. Shortly after the Revolutionary war, it was the first capital of the United States, and is the city where George Washington was inaugurated.

Around 40 years later, the construction of the Erie Canal turned the city into a major trading hub. Massive influxes of immigrants turned New York City into a melting pot of cultures and ideas. The Statue of Liberty was then constructed to welcome new immigrants, portraying NY as a place for liberty for all immigrants.

In 1931, the Empire state building was constructed, and over the course of the 20th century, the city became extremely developed through innovations in trading and construction techniques, turning it into a global center for finance, culture, and the arts. Even after the terrorist attacks on 9/11/2001, New York City has remained resilient and continues to grow.
