Phoebe Buffay is a character from the TV show FRIENDS. She is characterized as sweet-natured but straightforward, and childish as she has moments where she seems dull, but she is also very smart. She is from upstate New York, and was born in the late 1960s (somewhere between 1966-1968). She is approximately 27 years old in season one, and about 37 in the last season.

Phoebe has a sad upbringing. She was abandoned by her birth mother, her stepfather went to prison, and her adoptive mother died by s****de when she was 14 years old. Phoebe and her twin sister, Ursula, became homeless, and would often mug people as a means of survival.

Phoebe was a masseuse, played guitar at the coffee house where she and a lot of her FRIENDS spent time. She found a thumb in her soda can in the third episode of season 1 "The One With the Thumb", and she was compensated 7,000 dollars from the soda company.S2:
Phoebe was married to a gay Canadian ice dancer, Duncan, who she was secretly in love with. She married him to help him get a green card. She later found out that he was not really gay. He divorced her to be with the woman he was in love with. In Episode 21 "The One with the Bullies", she also found out she has a younger half-brother, Frank Buffay Jr, who she had met before but knew only as a stranger in Episode 6.S3:
Phoebe grows closer with her newfound brother, and goes to visit a friend of her adoptive mother in Episode 25 "The One at the Beach". She then found out that the friend of her adoptive mother was actually her birth mother.S4:
Phoebe decided to become the surrogate for her brother and his wife, Alice's, baby. While she waits to see if she is pregnant, she tries some silly methods trying to ensure she becomes pregnant. She does end up pregnant and during the ultrasound scan, it is revealed she is pregnant with triplets. Due to the pregnancy, Phoebe is not allowed to fly to London for Ross's wedding, so she listens in through Joey's phone.S5:
Before leaving for a friend trip, Phoebe's water breaks, and she is rushed to the hospital. She then gives birth to the triplets: Chandler, Leslie, and Frank Buffay Jr. Jr. In Episode 16 "The One with The Cop", Phoebe begins dating a policeman, Gary. They later move in together, but break up soon after when Phoebe see's him shoot a bird.S6:
Phoebe is the only one that knows that Ross and Rachel are still married after their drunken marriage in Las Vegas. She also hints at having gotten married in Las Vegas. Phoebe pretends to have a roommate called Denise to prevent Rachel from moving in. However, "Denise" suddenly moves out, allowing Rachel to move in. This is when more about Phoebe is revealed. In Season 6, Episode 18 "The One Where Ross Dates a Student", a fire breaks out in their apartment because Rachel left her hair iron on. Phoebe then moves in with Monica and Chandler, and is made aware of Chandlers secret plan to propose to Monica. Excited, she helps him pick out the ring.S7:
After living with Monica and Chandler for a while, Phoebe moves into an apartment alone. In another episode Phoebe is anxious that she won't be able to sing well at Monica and Chandlers wedding.S8:
In Episode 1 "The One After I Do", Phoebe discovers a positive pregnancy test in the garbage, she tells everyone Monica is pregnant but comes to find out it is actually Rachel who is pregnant. To help keep it a secret, she claims she is pregnant and tells everyone she said it was Monica because she wasn't ready to tell anyone.S9:
Joey and Phoebe set each other up on a date with another friend. Joey forgets to do this and sets Phoebe up with a random guy at the cafe, Mike. Mike and Phoebe hit it off and start a serious relationship. However, later they break up. After this Phoebe reconnects with David (an old boyfriend), who decides he wants to propose to Phoebe. As he is proposing Mike interrupts him and proposes to her too. Ultimately Phoebe turns down the proposals, and realizes she wants to be with Mike. Mike and Phoebe start dating again, and they get married in the last season.S10:
Mike proposes to Phoebe and after a few tries from both sides, they were finally engaged. Initially they planned to get married at city hall and to donate the money for the wedding to a charity for children in New York. However, Phoebe changes her mind and wants a big wedding, stressing over the details which Monica helps out with. In the end, after a blizzard stops, Mike and Phoebe get married in central perk in the snow with drum music playing. Phoebe also stops Rachel's flight, playing a big role in Ross and Rachel getting back together at the end.

Lisa Kudrow played the character Ursula Buffay in "Mad About You" before auditioning for the role of Phoebe Buffay on FRIENDS, creating the twin narrative, which allowed the crossover between the two shows. In an interview Lisa talks about how NBC got big on crossovers between show characters taking place in the same area after that.
