Welcome to my "Blog"!

Welcome to my “blog!” I put “blog” in quotes because the blogginess of this section of my website is either somewhat bloggy or quite bloggy depending on the definition of “blog” that one uses.

To me, a blog is a website where the owner(s) write their thoughts for the world to read. This website does not quite meet that definition because much of what I intend to post is meant not as much for “the world” as it is meant for myself. My goal with this “blog” is to have an archive of thoughts that I think future me might want to have a record of. I might also use it to put collections of miscellaneous links/resources that are cohesive enough to merit separation from my links page. Although I suppose at least this particular post is intended for a non-me reader, and it might at some point be useful to point others to something I write here, so this website is at least a little bloggy.

Then there is the dictionary definition of the word “blog”:¹

a regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style.

This website almost exactly meets the dictionary definition. It is in fact run by an individual, and will be written in an “informal or conversational style.” It does not, however, match the definition entirely in that I do not expect to post regularly.

It is thus my opinion that the most apt designation for this part of my website is not blog (without quotes) or something entirely different, but “blog” (with quotes). That, however, is annoying to type and looks funny, so in future posts I will likely omit the quotation marks. A keen reader will know that that is just shorthand :)
