John Magee has completed his Ph.D. in the Computer Science Department at Boston University,
where he also
received his MA degree in 2004. He is a member of the Image and Video Computing (IVC) group, where his main research interest is in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). John investigates novel user interface technologies that enable people with profound disabilities to communicate and participate socially in the world around them through computers.
John has several years experience as a teaching fellow and instructor teaching introductory undergraduate courses at Boston University.
John graduated from Boston College with a BA
in Computer Science and Mathematics in May 2001. As an undergraduate, he was active in several performance music groups including the marching band, pep band, concert band, Swinging Eagles jazz band, and brass ensemble. He served as a Teaching Assistant for several computer science courses and a philosophy course.
John is an elected Town Meeting member in the Town of Natick, where is also the chair of the
Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee. He is interested in social justice issues as well as energy, environment,
and transportation technology and policy.
He previously worked for Daimler AG in Germany during the summer of 2002 developing computer vision systems to detect drowsiness in
car drivers. He worked for a startup company, Perceptive Network Technologies, Inc. incorporating face detection
technologies into presence-aware instant messaging applications. He worked for the Boston Red Sox information technology
department, maintaining and managing computer systems and providing technical support. From 1995-1997, John was a
website developer at Coordinated Systems, Inc. in East Hartford, CT.
