Walden Pond State Reservation
Best known for its
connection to writer and philosopher
Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862).
Imagine...living in a house like this for two years
American author and philosopher Henry David Thoreau did just that from 1845 to 1847. He hauled materials and constructed the house with his own hands. In his book, Walden; or, Life in the Woods, Thoreau described his house and its peaceful location near the north edge of the pond. His detailed writing made the construction of this replica possible, and it invites us to imagine his "experiment" in living deliberately.
Leisure
Walden Pond was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962 as a result of Thoreau's stay. It is also a recreational destination where visitors can enjoy a swim, a hike, a little fishing, or, with a nod to Thoreau, a moment of solitude and reflection.
By Henry D. Thoreau
TWENT TO THE WOODS,
BECAUSE
I WISHED TO LIVE DELIBERATELY.
TO FRONT ONLY THE ESSENTIAL
FACTS OF LIFE,
AND SEE IF I
COULD NOT LEARN WHAT IT HAD
TO TEACH, AND NOT.
WHEN I CAME TO DIE,
DISCOVER THAT I HAD NOT LIVED.
