The construction of Tengwang Pavilion was ordered by Tengwang Li Yuanying, brother of the Tang Emperor Taizong in 653. Built as an entertainment venue, it overlooks the Ganjiang River and is praised for its magnificent view.
Because it was built with brick and wood, it was prone to fire and war destruction. It has been destroyed 28 times and the current structure was rebuilt in the 1980s.
